Student Success Statement

"A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder."
-Thomas Carlyle

Reflection: I believe that this quote means that a man who has no goals, has no direction. On a boat the rudder steers the boat to whatever direction the helmsman steers it, it has a place it wants to go. If a man has no goals, they don't know where they're going and so they stay stuck in the same place forever. After high school you can have the goal to go to college and study for a career but if  you have no goals then you don't know what to do. You don't know if you want to work or study and so you're left with nothing and like a boat without a rudder you'll eventually crash if not steered. Having goals will let you get somewhere even if its starting small.

"If there is beauty in character, there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.
Conclusion:
If there is beauty in character, there will be peace in the world"
-Chinese Proverb

Reflection: I believe this proverb is true because it states that beauty in the character cam create peace. If everyone in the world showed a great character, the goodness will spread and lead a nation to peace, through smaller pieces. It begins with just one person that will pass the goodness onto their friends and family, who will pass it onto other members and little by little the peace will rise and spread to the nation. Peace begins with good character and if everyone had one, then destruction and anger would cease to exist.
The Six Pillars of Character

1.Trustworthiness
  • Be honest and reliable and respectful to your family and friends.
  • If you see something done that isn't right then speak up and say something to someone.
2.Respect
  • Be tolerant and accepting of differences.
  • Use good manners and no bad language, be considerate of others.
3.Responsibility
  • Do what you're supposed to and plan ahead, think before you act.
  • If you forget to do something, be a good example and own up to your mistakes.
4.Fairness
  • Play by the rules; take turns and share, do not blame others and cooperate with everyone.
  • When playing together don't hog all the toys or the ball and share and play fairly with others.
5.Caring
  • Be kind and compassionate; forgive and express gratitude.
  • If someone is in need of help then be a caring person and offer a hand.
6.Citizenship
  • Get involved and help make your school/community better. Be a god neighbor and obey laws and rules.
  • If your community needs volunteers for a community project, then offer your hand and be a good citizen in helping being change to the environment.

Reflection: I believe the Six Pillars are a great way to order the good traits people should have with them to have a great character with good morals. They all describe traits to keep the peace and help others and the environment. Having these 6 traits are a sure way to help you stay in the 'Right' lane and be a good person.

Student Success Statement

"I would prefer to fail with honor than win by cheating."
-Sophocles

Reflection: I believe this quote means that if you win by cheating, you are not honorable, you lied and so you did not win fairly and you hardly won at all. You only truly win by winning with the rules. If you cheat on a test, you got a good grade sure, but you didn't learn anything. You have won nothing but a false percentage. If you fail the test and you didn't cheat, then you are honorable, you knew what you did and from the things you don't know, you learn. You have gained knowledge and kept a god character, that is very honorable.
Memorial Day

1. Memorial Day is a day where those who died in active military service are remembered and honored for their courage and lives given to keep out country safe.

2. The purpose of Memorial Day is to never forget those who gave their life for our country and to ensure that they are honored forever.

3. Memorial Day is held on the last Monday in May although it used to be celebrated on May 30th.

4. A few ways to show honor and respect on Memorial Day is by going to visit the Flag Garden, USS constitution museum etc. and pay your respects or attending a Memorial Day service. Just acknowledging and being grateful for their service is the main point of Memorial Day

5. Traditionally, on Memorial Day, the american flag is lowered to half staff until noon to commemorate all of the lost soldiers and then is raised at full staff for the rest of the day.

6. I do not know what I will do on Memorial Day Except maybe attend a service but if I had the chance I would like to go to the Flag Garden.

"If I've got correct goals, and if I keep pursuing them the best way I know how, everything else falls into line. If I do the right thing right, i'm going to succeed."
-Dan Dierdof

Reflection: I believe this quote means that If you believe in doing the right thing then you should have no trouble in pursuing your goals. If you continue to reach goals without hesitation in doing it right, then you are on a correct path and will reach the highest point you want to be on. All you have to do is choose the right and don't give up

"The most important thing you will ever have is good values."
-Dennis Prager

Reflection: I believe that this quote means that having good values is the best trait any person can acquire. Having good values automatically connects you with a good personality and good character. You won't be swayed to choose the wrong or ever not help someone. You having good values leads you to having a good life and never feeling guilty over bad actions because you know better than to follow the bad crowd.Having good values will let you outweigh the need to ever if the case, cheat, lie, or steal. Instead, by following your good values you will be trustworthy, smart, hard worker, and of course good. You have the ability to choose what to do and if you had really strong good values then to choose the right would be your only choice.

"Nothing is ever gained in doing what's wrong."
-Wilford Woodruff

Reflection: I believe that what Woodruff means from the quote is that anyone who chooses the wrong will never win. If you choose the wrong in hopes of a prize outweighing choosing the right, then you win nothing. The guilt will drop you and you will feel like you've lost more than you have gained. Nothing will ever come out of choosing the wrong so it's best to stick to what makes you a better person and choose the right.

Student Success Statement

"The reward for doing the right thing is mostly an internal phenomenon: self respect, dignity (self-worth), integrity, and self esteem."
-Dr. Laura Schlessinger

Reflection:  I think that what Schlessinger means by this is that when someone does the right thing it makes them feel good. Its all happening inside them, they feel better and happier because they have rewarded themselves for giving instead of getting. Any time someone must choose between a wrong and a right, they mostly pick the one that benefits them even if the choice is wrong. They feel guilty but the reward was physical so they felt accomplished somewhat. Choosing the right choice may not always be easy for someone but they get rewarded way more inside than the others.

Student Success Statement

"Dare to stand alone." -Thomas S. Monson

Reflection: I believe that what Monson means by this quote is that a lot of people will follow the crowd. People see others doing things, mostly wrong things and they want to join. They believe that since everybody else is doing it, then so can they. I do not think that just because everyone is doing it, it is right; there is still a morale to keep in mind and if you decide to choose the right then you must keep that going. A party for example can be fun but if you see everyone start drinking alcohol, it doesn't mean you should to. It takes a lot of strength to stand your ground even when a lot of people push you, but if you take the challenge then you have a better character then the ones in the flow and it won't matter what everyone else does.

Forgiveness Video

This video showed the story of a young man, Eric Smallridge, who was arrested and sentenced to 22 years in prison after driving under the influence and crashing into a car that held two, 20 year old girls, and killing them instantly. Both the family and Eric believed that justice had been served at the trial and it was enough time to make him reflect on what he's done as a result for his bad choices. After a while the mother of Megan, Renee, wrote a letter to Eric, who was still in prison and in her handwriting was a forgiveness letter. She sent it to Eric to finally relieve the pressure of having to hate the killer of his daughter and asked the judge to reduce his sentence by nearly half of what it was. Eric too, felt relieved that he would no longer carry the burden of being hated by the family. This story showed the power of forgiveness and how it can resolve a lot of your inside battles. Eric and Renee now give conferences at high schools to show the danger or drunk driving.

"When a deep injury is done us, we never recover until we forgive."
-Alan Paton

Reflection: This quote by Alan Paton tells me that a lot of the time a moment that you feel resentful towards or even an action done by a friend that you did not like will stick with you and always leave an open wound until you decide to forgive them and get closure for the action. If a friend ever did something to embarrass you and you never forgave them, you will always feel hatred for them and even yourself for possibly losing a great friend. After forgiving the person, you'll feel resolved and will be able to walk lighter knowing that you've gotten over one thing that always held you back.
